PAPI - Precision Approach Path Indicator .
PAR - Precision Approach Radar - a ground-radar based instrument approach which provides both horizontal and vertical guidance.
PARACHUTE - A device used or intended to be used to retard the fall of a body or object through the air.
PART 135 - the section of the FAR's that govern any charter flight. PART 91 - the section of the FAR's that govern the operation of any general aviation flight.
PART 121 - the section of the FAR's that govern major airline operations.
PAYLOAD - Anything that an aircraft carries beyond what is required for its operation during flight.
PBH - Power by the Hour. (Rolls Royce engines).
PC - Positive Control (Trade name for Mooney Aircraft wing leveler).
PCL - Pilot Controlled Lighting (RWY Lights operated by Microphone).
PEAK - This is the point at which a battery will no longer accept a charge, and converts the energy to heat. This is damaging to the battery pack, and potentially hazardous.
PEAK CHARGER - This type of charger will eliminate the guesswork. When the battery has reached peak, the charger reverts to a maintenance charge rate, which will not damage the pack.
PEAK OUTPUT POWER - The maximum transmitter power output measured over a short time; usually used to rate pulse transmissions.
PILOT IN COMMAND - The pilot responsible for the operation and safety of an aircraft during flight time.
PILOTAGE - Navigation by visual reference to landmarks.
PIREP - Pilot (weather) Report.
PITCH - 1) One of the three axes of flight, this is the vertical movement or the up and down motion. 2) The angle of a propeller rotor blade in relation to its arc, also the distance advanced by a blade in one full rotation.
PITCH AXIS - The airplane axis controlled by the elevator. Pitch is illustrated by holding the airplane at each wingtip. Raising or lowering the nose is the pitch movement. This is how the climb or dive is controlled.
PITCH RATE - Rate of change of pitch.
PITCH SETTING - the propeller blade setting as determined by the blade angle measured in a manner, and at a radius, specified by the instruction manual for the propeller.
PRECISION APPROACH PROCEDURE - A standard instrument approach procedure in which an electronic glide slope is provided, such as ILS and PAR.
POSITIVE CONTROL - The separation of all air traffic within designated airspace by air traffic control.
POWER LOADING - The GROSS WEIGHT of an airplane divided by the rated horsepower, computed for standard air density.
PROHIBITED AREA - Airspace designated under part 73 within which no person may operate an aircraft without the permission of the using agency.
PROPELLER - A device for propelling an aircraft that has blades on an engine-driven shaft and that, when rotated, produces by its action on the air, a thrust approximately perpendicular to its plane of rotation. It includes control components normally supplied by its manufacturer, but does not include main and auxiliary rotors or rotating airfoils of engines.
PT - Procedure Turn.
